Located south of Casco Viejo, the Calzada de Amador, also known as Causeway Panama, is one of the most famous roads in the city. It connects the territorial part with three small islets: Isla Naos, Isla Perico, and Isla Flamenco, known as the Amador Causeway Islands.

The construction of Causeway Panama took place in 1913 when the United States government decided to reuse rock recovered from the excavations for the construction of the Panama Canal. Originally, the place was part of a military compound known as Fort Amador, with the goal of protecting the entrance to the canal. Later, it became a tourist attraction as it is today, although even now, you can see traces of its military past.
Here you take the ferries to visit the Pearl Islands and Taboga Island, two incredible natural destinations that are just a few minutes sailing from Panama City.
Calzada de Amador is also home to many of the city’s top attractions, starting with stunning skyline views and an unforgettable car ride surrounded by nothing but the ever-blue Pacific Ocean, including views of its entrance to the Panama Canal.
For those who love physical activity and exercise, there is the Bay of Panama, with rental rowboats available, and the causeway itself has long lanes ideal for biking. You can also rent scooters and segways on the boardwalk, to get around in style, even if cycling isn’t your thing.
On the continental side is the Biomuseum, a natural history museum focused on changing our perception and understanding of nature and its richness, and once on the islands is the Punta Culebra National Park, administered by the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
